On February 19 2010 the University of Rijeka signed the Declaration of Commitment to The European Charter for Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers and thus became the first Croatian signatory! The Charter sets out the rights and duties of researchers, as well as research and funding institutions. The Code aims at ensuring equal treatment of all researchers in Europe and increasing transparency in their recruitment. These two documents, addressed to researchers as well as to employers and funders in both the public and private sectors, are key elements in the European Union's policy to make research an attractive career, which is a vital feature of its strategy to stimulate economic and employment growth. To date more than 150 organisations representing over 1000 institutions from 30 European and non-European countries have undersigned the Charter and Code principles. You can view all signatories here. The University of Rijeka called the Charter & Code "a benchmark and orientation guide which will second our endeavours to maintain and foster high-quality research and education and to provide a fair and inspiring research environment for our researchers". By declaring its commitment to these documents, the University of Rijeka made an important step towards Croatia's fuller integration into the European Research Area.
