The City of Zagreb among the 100 climate-neutral and smart European cities

zagreb

All Member States are represented in 100 cities, and 12 cities are located in countries that have joined or could join the EU's research and innovation program, Horizon Europe.

Horizon Europe will provide € 360 million for the period 2022-2023 for the mission for cities with the ultimate goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030. Research and innovation measures will focus on clean mobility, energy efficiency, and green urban planning, and will offer the opportunity to launch joint initiatives and strengthen cooperation in synergy with other EU programs.

Benefits for cities include customized counseling and assistance on a platform launched as part of the NetZeroCities project. They will also be provided with additional funding, as well as the opportunity to join innovation activities.

The selected cities will draw up climate agreements for cities, which will include a general plan for achieving climate neutrality in all sectors, such as energy, buildings, waste and transport management, and related investment plans. Citizens, research organizations, and the private sector will be involved in this process. The clear and visible commitments made by cities in the treaties will enable them to work with the EU, national and regional authorities, and, most importantly, with their own citizens to achieve this ambitious goal.
